Eating seafood in Jimbaran is like a trip ritual every single time I go to Bali. Though they only serve grilled seafood, the sauces and the seasonings ala Bali are to die for. Especially the mussels. The red sauce… oh man.
But since last year, I rarely go to the famous Jimbaran beach to have my seafood (except when I go with a group of people that want seafood by the beach, then I have no choice la.. hahaha..), I prefer to have my seafood in one particular small restaurant (or Warung). You might have passed the place before and didn’t notice it or overlooked the place, but this kind of places always gives you the best satisfaction. On my last visit to Bali, I decided to visit it again.
The name’s Warung Mami. A small seafood restaurant that only serves what they got from the fisherman earlier on the same day. (You want fresh stuff? This is your place, mate!)
The place is ran by Pak Putu with his family, and they only open from 12.30 PM till 6 PM (or until sold out, usually around 4 or 5 PM). The word Mami came from his beloved daughter’s name. Yes, he named the place after her daughter. 🙂
As I mentioned earlier, this is not a by-the-beach restaurant, so there is no such thing like a wind blowing through your hair from the sea or the sunset view you usually see in the Jimbaran Beach. It’s just a small place that sometimes gets hot due to the weather. But hey, eating oh-so-good-seafood while sweating due to hot weather mixes up with spicy sambals is one of the best thing in life, no? 😉
When you come to the restaurant, you have to choose the ingredients first before you get a table. They only have fish, clams, and prawns. For the fish usually you can choose from what available that day. When they opened their cool box, I was juggling my decision between red snapper (kakap merah), groper (kerapu), and pomfret (bawal). For prawns and clams, they only have one kind. Don’t worry tho, the prawns are quite big ones. XD
Then, all you have to do is just wait for the food to be ready. If you like to eat seafood in Jimbaran, you’d know that they never ask you how you want it to be cooked because they always grill it. Same goes for Warung Mami, they will grill it with their own Bali seasoning.
But, please kindly wait for your food since their grilling area is not that big. Yet, don’t you worry about the quality of the process, believe me, they’re an expert on this. They use dry coconut shell as the fuel for grilling. Sit tight, have some drinks, talk to your friends or family while they make you an awesome seafood.
I ended up ordering one red snapper (chose the big one hahaha), two portion of clams, and one portion of prawns. When you eat there, they will give three sambals/sauce for each person to go with the food: sambal matah (a mix of shallot, tomato, garlic, and lime juice, and theirs is awesome as hell), red sambal (also bad ass), and spicy sweet soy sauce (mix of sweet soy sauce with cuts of green/orange chilies). Not only that, they’ll also serve plencing kangkung (spicy water spinach) and some kind of cucumber and tomato pickles for each tables.
And then…. as people said that good stuff happen to those who wait..
Here comes the real hero!!
The fish was so so so good! It didn’t smell and not even tasted fishy. You can tell how fresh it was before they cooked it. The seasonings were just spot on. Every pieces of the meat was seriously flaky and delicious. The prawns were also great. Big ones and they cleaned it well too! And finally the clams.. This for me is the main event. They sauce and the seasoning were crazy good. You just slurped it into your mouth altogether with the sauce.. So tasty! Don’t forget to eat all of them with a nice hot white rice. Oh, way too good. All of them were too good. I’m getting really excited as I wrote this. Oh man, take me back thereee pleaseeee…. XD
And you know what? The best part of it is that it only cost me IDR 210.000 net. Yeap. All the seafood, including the rice (I even ordered one more portion of rice for me), the vegies, the drinks, and the sambals. Cheap. Definitely cheap. Literally, the best IDR 210.000 I’ve ever spent.
So what are you waiting for? If you’re bored with the same place to eat seafood in Jimbaran, this could be your cure. Located in Jalan Uluwatu II, Jimbaran area, just right before the rounded cross road.
Anyway, you might want to call first just to check whether they opened or not. Just incase. 🙂
Enjoy your seafood! 🙂
